Porsche Overload - Porsche Rennsport Reunion V
After a four year hiatus, the largest gathering of Porsche in the world was back at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This is the largest gathering of Porsche race cars, drivers, and street cars ever.
Friday morning I left Santa Cruz for Laguna Seca at around 6am and pulled into the track at 7am. I paid for corral parking in the DWA Porsche 944, which means that I got to park trackside in a designated area for an estimated 600 Porsches.
"Is that a 928? 928's park in section 6, drive to that guy and he'll tell you where to park." I then pulled up to the next guy, annoyed that this dude didn't know the difference between my 944 and a 928. "I don't know where 964's park" said the next guy. After about 10 minutes of driving from person to person, I found out where the 944's were supposed to park. Our designated parking was at the very back next to a crane and a row of toilets...no respect!
After parking I met up with a couple friends and started walking through the pits, corrals, retail booths and displays along with watching the on-track action as significant historic racecars battled it out on one of the most iconic race tracks. We were overwhelmed...everywhere we looked there were famous drivers, like Hurley Haywood, Vic Elford, and Patrick Long, just to name a few. Every single car was amazing and significant in some way. If any single one of the cars in the paddock were in a parking lot, I would drool over it for an hour, but in this setting I found myself walking by Porsche 917's without giving them a 2nd look.
As with most car events, some of the coolest stuff is to be seen in the parking lot, and this event did not disappoint. The only real disappointment came when I went to the 924/944/968/928 to leave. This was the smallest group of Porsches in the corral by far, and half of the cars were shit boxes. Almost every one had modern wheels, tinted windows, and accessories from 'Auto Zone' plastered all over them. I understand why the put us in the back corner.
I went for two of the three days and probably walked 12 miles.. I saw a lot of Porsche nerds wearing Porsche branded everything, waiting in lines to get memorabilia autographed or have the hipster "face of Porsche" Magnus Walker give them a hug and have their picture taken with him... All that being said, I can't wait for the next one!
