DWA! project Car / 1985 Porsche 944 / Console Delete

I have been thinking about doing a console delete for awhile now, and I finally got the guts to make it happen. I have always liked the look and feel of a car without a console, ever since I had my first Porsche 914. Even though the 944 has a center tunnel because of the drive shaft, it frees up a lot of knee room and I am stoked with how it turned out.

As you can see, I cut the console right under the HVAC panel eliminating the din for the stereo. After making the cut, I rounded the corners and filled them, followed by a few coats of textured paint to give it a finished off look. I also added a plate of carbon fiber to the bottom of the console to give it a little strength that was missing after hacking it apart.

I don't have power mirrors, I eliminated my rear wiper and don't care about the fader knob for the stereo, so those buttons are all gone. I have yet to relocate the sunroof button, but I will probably mount it on the bottom side of the console.

In place of the stereo, I am running a small amp that I purchased on Amazon for about $33 ([url]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SASSY7A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00[/url]). The amp is wired to the ignition for power and I am very happy with it so far.

With the console out, there was some missing carpet on the center tunnel, so I bought a yard of the non backed carpet ([url]http://www.yourautotrim.com/black7.html[/url]) from my favorite online upholstery store. This stuff doesn't match the factory carpet...it's actually a lot like the material on a dash mat, but it looks good and is really easy to conform to the shape of the center console.
